Apple has just announced a big release date. Both iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 will go live on September 18th. They revealed this during their iPhone 15 launch event. Apple actually first mentioned this development at the WWDC event last June.
Users of the sixth-generation iPad models and onwards will soon enjoy enhancements of iPadOS 17. The operating system also extends to include the fifth-generation iPad mini, third-generation iPad Air, and second-generation iPad Pro 12.9-inch models. Of course, the new iOS 17 is far from second-rate. iPhone users can expect features such as Live Voicemail, StandBy mode, and a fresh Journal app. Notably, Siri can now activate without needing to precede your command with “hey”. Additionally, the Live Voicemail allows you to monitor a transcript of a missed call in real-time.
A spectacular standout feature is the StandBy mode. This nifty inclusion lets your iPhone double as a beside clock when placed on its side. Plus, you can now compose personalized stickers and set up Contact posters. On top of that, tweaks in autocorrect and voice transcription can significantly enhance navigation.
Now, let’s turn to NameDrop. This fun tool lets you instantly share contact info via AirDrop just by aligning two iPhone devices. However, Apple warns that some of these great features may not roll out in every country. So, make it a point to check their website for your country’s eligibility.
Early access to these developments has already given us a sense of what to expect. For instance, members of Apple’s developer program had it right after the WWDC event. They launched the initial public beta on July 12th. But, bear in mind, iOS 17 only works with iPhones with the A12 Bionic chip or newer. This makes the iPhone XR / XS the oldest models compatible with the update.
