Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett announced today that the third dose of COVID-19 vaccine will be gotten to people over 60 years old from August 1.
Israel will begin to give a third dose of vaccine to people over 60 years old from August 1.
Naftali Bennett said in a televised statement that this is part of the “Auxiliary Vaccination Campaign”. Those over 60 years of age who received the vaccine more than 5 months ago will receive the third dose.
The third dose provided by Israel is the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine. In order to reduce the spread of the Delta variant virus, Israel set a global precedent and became the first country to provide citizens with the third dose of Western vaccine on a large scale.
Israel is the leader of the global vaccination campaign. Many elderly people have been vaccinated between December last year and January and February this year.
However, since the emergence of the Delta variant, the Ministry of Health has twice notified that the effectiveness of vaccines against infection has decreased, and the protection against severe cases has also slightly decreased.
In Israel, a health maintenance organization will be responsible for administering additional vaccines. This action will make Israel a testing ground before the US FDA approves the third dose.
