Jonah Hill is a renowned actor and director. His ex-girlfriend, Sarah Brady, however, sees him in a different light. In an Instagram storm on Friday, she flung accusations of emotional abuse, misogyny, and controlling behavior at Hill. Brady, a professional surfer, dated Hill in 2021 and 2022. Her Instagram stories featured supposed texts between the two, painting a disturbing picture.
Hill allegedly made demands through his texts. He disallowed Brady from maintaining friendships with women in “unstable places.” And he didn’t want her to surf with men either. He even dictated what content she could share on her own Instagram. According to Brady, Hill chose to control her social media presence and life.
One image from the messages bears particular attention. It treats a supposed statement from Jonah Hill. In it, Hill seems to have his ideas about “boundaries for a romantic partnership.” His idea of these boundaries included Brady removing specific Instagram posts. Specifically, posts of Brady surfing. And more specifically, posts of her wearing a bathing suit, whether she was surfing or not. This demand came after Hill’s announcement on social media. He wanted people to stop commenting on his body because he found it unhelpful and hurtful.
Hill also allegedly expressed his views on Brady’s therapist in another text. He seemed to dismiss her therapist’s opinion of him. To quote Hill, “I love how your therapist thinks I suck. I am the best boyfriend. On earth.” Hill has a high opinion of his merit as a boyfriend. But his actions didn’t quite line up with his claim.
In another message, Hill’s alleged disdain for modeling surfaces. He sarcastically urges Brady, “Go, model! It’s a fulfilling life. You’ll [love] it.” Hill follows this with a sobering insight into the modeling world. He states, “Real depth and substance for the sustainability of relationships.”
While Brady has been vocal about her grievances, Hill has been silent. Nor has there been any rebuttal from his representative. Yet, the fallout seems potentially severe for Hill. His relationship with his current girlfriend, Olivia Millar, could be affected. Millar owns an online vintage shop, and the pair has a child together. Brady’s parting shot on Instagram hinted at this. She said, “I hope my ex has a daughter. Maybe she’ll turn him into a real feminist.”
Brady had shared an intimate moment with Hill. Hill revealed a text message dated Dec. 2, 2021. After their breakup, Hill stepped back from promoting his work due to mental health struggles. This decision came from two decades of anxiety attacks, made worse by media appearances and public events.
Brady had a reason for airing her dirty laundry on such a public platform, Instagram. She declared that keeping quiet was causing more damage to her mental health. Brady has issues with mental health, but she used this as an insight rather than a tool for control. She said, “I, too, struggle with mental health, but I do not use it to control ppl [sic] like he did to me.”
She further added her observations about fame and emotional abuse. The intensity of fame can often create a reinforcing cycle of identical opinions, which in turn, can facilitate the occurrence of emotional abuse. She clarified that being emotionally abusive doesn’t make Hill a terrible person. But it doesn’t constitute justification either. As Brady eloquently said, it doesn’t mean it’s okay.
