European Center for Disease Control (ECDC) warned today that vaccination alone will not be enough to prevent the rise of COVID-19 Omicron variants, and strong action must be taken immediately.
ECDC Director Andrea Ammon issued a statement and pointed out that as of the current situation, vaccination alone will not allow us to prevent the impact of the Omicron variant, because there is no time to deal with the remaining vaccination gap.
Andrea Ammon also said that there is an urgent need to take strong actions to reduce transmission, reduce the heavy burden on the healthcare system, and protect the most vulnerable people in the coming months.
Andrea Ammon pointed out that there are signs that community transmission has occurred in EU and EEA countries, and there are models showing that a further surge in Omicron cases will occur.
